"Of course not. You're just so charming." She rolled her eyes as she said this. "And you flatter me, you silly fool."

"I'm glad you feel flattered, because if you didn't, it would show me that I needed to work on my charm some more. It's really quite frustrating to have to brush up on skills I naturally have. I wouldn't know how to practice!" He rubbed his stomach, which had punctuated his remarks with growls. "Okay, let's go find some food."

"Of course you wouldn't. You don't know how to practice anything. It's a wonder you do well in school."

Xanderis laughed. "Oh, you didn't know that I only do well in school because my father bribes the headmaster? I thought that was obvious to everyone!"

"I had my guesses." She smiled.

"Well, now that we've cleared that up, we should eat. Hey, you!" Xanderis called to a servant walking down the hall. The servant looked up and chuckled, knowing full well that Xanderis knew his name.
"Yes, sir?"
"What's for breakfast? I'm about to fall over and die."
"Well, I think I smelled bacon in the kitchen. You might want to get in there."
Xanderis bowed. "Thank you, kind sir." He offered his arm to Amber. "May I escort the lady?"

"Sure." She hooked her arm around his.

Xanderis entered the kitchen, sniffing the air. "Well, this smells wonderful," he announced.
The cook looked up at him, raising her eyebrows. "Don't get in the way now, boy, or I'll smack you with my spoon!" She brandished a wooden spoon at him that she had been using to scramble the eggs.
"Ah, you're flinging eggs everywhere!!" Xanderis said, horrified, and backed up away from the mess.

"Now look what you did," said Amber teasingly. She pulled him by the arm back out of the kitchen. "Let's just leave her till she's done. I'd prefer to have breakfast today, and preferably soon."

"Rather than wear it?" he teased. "True. Shall we sit down?" He gestured to the table.

"Precisely." She sat down. "Anyway, what kind of horribly fiendish things do you have planned for the week?"

"For the week?" Xanderis tapped his lips with his fingertips. "Hmm. Well, I'd considered making all the pencils in one of my classes look like worms."

Amber snorted. "Really? That's it? Turn it up a notch."

Xanderis raised his eyebrows. "Is this a challenge?" He smirked. "Okay. I turn all the pencils into snakes. While everyone - including the teacher - is holding one."

Amber nodded, pleased. "That's better. Now, real snakes or fake ones?"

"Well, real, obviously," Xanderis said, raising his eyebrows. "But not venomous. Maybe snakes that look like venomous snakes though."

Amber smiled smugly. "Good. Now, when's breakfast gonna be ready? I thought you paid servants to do their job, not lounge around."

"I thought so too," grumbled Xanderis. "Oi!" he called to the kitchen. "We're starving in here!"
The cook entered the dining room, rolling her eyes at him. She carried a platter with bacon on one side, eggs on the other, and fried potatoes in the middle.

Amber eyed it hungrily. "That looks amazing."

Xanderis nodded, his eyes wide. "Delicious. Smells great, too. Thank you, slave." He nodded to the cook regally.
She rolled her eyes again, but smiled. "Enjoy."

Amber grabbed a fork and began eating. "Mm, this is good."

Xanderis scooped a large portion onto his plate and began shoveling it into his mouth. "Mm," he grunted.

Amber continued eating, not speaking.

After swallowing a huge bite, Xanderis cleared his throat and closed his eyes. "Amber. We need to do something unforgettable today."

Amber nodded. "I agree. What's on the menu?"
