Market District

Keith smirked. "I like the darkness. I've spent a fair bit of time considering it. That bit of prose was just something I thought of a while ago."

"Ah, I see." Tempest half-smiled. "It's very nice." After a moment, she sat down on the rock, her legs dangling down the side.

Keith sat beside her, watching the stars come to life one by one in the night sky.

Tempest put her hand behind herself and leaned back, her red hair dark in the twilight. She sighed suddenly. "I have detention tomorrow. I guess I'll be getting to your house later than I thought."

"Unfortunate." Keith shrugged. "The snakes are more active in the twilight, anyway. It'd be a better time."

Tempest nodded. "It's been hot lately. I don't blame them for hiding." She shot Keith a glance out of the corner of her narrowed eyes. "You know, most people would have asked what I did to get detention," she observed.

"I didn't read your mind, if that's what you're wondering." Keith chuckled. "I assumed that you talked back to a teacher or some similar minor infraction, and if you wanted me to know, you'd tell me."

Tempest laughed. "Okay, just checking. I think I annoy most of my teachers."

Keith grinned impishly. "That's easy to believe," he said, teasing her.

Tempest pretended to scowl, but then grinned. "I know it is. The only teacher that actually likes me is Professor Darsmoon, and that hardly counts, since I'm studying elemental magic."

Keith chuckled. "I know the feeling." He focused and idly called a small flame in his palm, playing it over his fingers. "I don't get along with authority well."

Tempest nodded, sympathizing. "Yeah... I don't know if that's my problem, or if I just don't like stupid rules. I mean, my detention is for not keeping my chair on all four legs." She paused. "And then I got an attitude, but still."

"That's part of it. I think most rules are stupid." The fire swirled into a small tornado of flame over his hand.

Tempest huffed. "No kidding. Most of them seem to be there just to annoy people. And teachers seem to get a sick sense of satisfaction enforcing them. Stringently."

Keith chuckled. "Indeed. I find that simple illusions can often have great benefit, in those situations." The fire tornado became a rose in the palm of his hand.

Tempest gave a rueful smile. "Too bad neither of us are in Sylys." She cocked her head. "I actually don't know anyone in Sylys. Not that I know many people at school."

So when are you gonna make a new character?

Keith laughed. "Often, I can make illusions better than a practiced illusionist. I can just suggest to someone's mind that something is a certain way, and their mind often listens."

I dunno. I'm not sure who to make.

Tempest frowned. "But isn't that... slightly illegal? I hate stupid rules, but somehow I feel likes it would unethical to just... do that."

"If all I'm doing is making the teacher think I have four chair legs on the floor, instead of two, who am I hurting?"

"Touche." Tempest shrugged. "I see your point. But." She tapped her lips with an index finger. "I think the challenge is knowing where to draw the line. But, we've already agreed to disagree," she said with a smile. "I should practice my illusions more."

Keith nodded, conceding the argument. "Practice does make perfect." He looked up at the rising moon. "It's getting late. Will your father be wondering where you are?"

Tempest shrugged. "Probably. Once he finds out I've been hanging out with another human being though, he'll be pleased." She got to her feet. "But I should probably head home."

Keith stood as well. "Would you let me walk you home? The streets can be unsafe after dark."

Tempest looked at him, a little bit surprised. "If you want to, I guess. Thanks." She smiled.

Keith smiled as well. "It's my pleasure. And since, out of respect for you, I'm not reading your mind, you'll have to lead."
